Enough Talk about Canoes
The sounds of the River
have haunted me some days.
The power within
to give life
And take it.
With the company of my people,
I surface to feel the warmth again.
Tuning into
the healing vibrations within the river’s chorus…
Pushing and pulling.
As in life.

    Hey Ethan, as professional or highly experienced kayaker. How high do you rank adjustable footrests on a kayak?

    • @HappyPaddlin
      @HappyPaddlin День тому

      You absolutely have to have footbraces for power and back support. Adjustability for my touring boats is key for different footwear and conditions (tighter for rough, looser for cruising). These rec boats in the vid all have something which is better than nothing but most are trying to do it for as cheap as possible.

    A couple questions. What trim would be the quietest when you set your fishing rod down on the gunnel? I don't want to spook the fish. Can you permanently mount a portaging yoke in these solo boats and still sit or kneel or do you need removable? Seems like that could get old if you had a lot of short portages between lakes

    • @HappyPaddlin
      @HappyPaddlin 3 дні тому

      Wood Trim is quietest. Regarding yokes, you have to use removable. It takes about 15 seconds to put in place. Solo clamp on yoke w CVCA pads is what I prefer!

      Thanks, got tired of hearing myself so just thought this would be a nice change. It’s a Stohlquist Rocker ‘24 model and I have some further vid of it in a next vid I’m working on. Tried to wear others, from other brands as well. The Rocker is the one and only for me! Descent is the rescue version though a QR belt can be added to the rocker nicely which is more than enough for most. I have a red one on in most other vids. Had to match the boat ;) in this one.

    For the sit-on-tops, isn't a hatch that "gives access to the entire boat" a swamping hazard, to say nothing of gear being able to slide to an inaccessible spot? Does it really work that way?

    • @HappyPaddlin
      @HappyPaddlin 6 днів тому

      Even high end sit on tops feature this but likely have better hatches that are more trustworthy. At the end of the vid I recommend all these as “shoreline kayaks”. However, one can add floatation bladders to help. Hardcore sea kayakers will carry extra floatation bladders in the event of rock damage to a compartment. @headwaterskayak had a scenario where those bags helped him get back to the beach after a bad rock garden crash. Open cold water is a place that going “over the top” isn’t ever going to be a bad thing!

    I just went and looked at them a few days ago at my local Walmart. The models there are different from the ones in tbe video...2 are the same. I'm not a fisherman and won't want or need and angler kayak, because I'll never use all those fishing accessories, plus the weight is incredible at approximately 60lbs dry. Pelican has a 38lb. 10 footer RamX that I looked at. But really wanted a 120X 12' for tracking. I've paddled a bunch and have done some pretty long coastal treks in Florida and a bunch of inland waterway travels. My go-to is a 12'-13' boat. I weight about 190 and 5'10" so with camping gear and supplies the boat sits nicely on its lines...I mean the ones that I have personally owned. The thing is that I started looking around in my area for higher-line used kayaks and found that I could pick up a used but in really good shape touring kayak for roughly the same price as one of the Walmart kayaks...I found a bunch of Aquaterras 14' for $200-$500 with loads of extras, paddles, seats, bags, etc. And they're real touring designs. I'm a former sailboat builder and a cruiser. My current boat is a 1976 Balboa 26'SK (profile pic). So I'm sensitive to "ugly" designs and all these heavy, big box, blow moulded fishing yaks are UAF. I don't think that I would waste the money. There's actually hundreds of free or cheap kayak plans out there. I'm thinking I'm going to build myself a hybrid kayak/canoe like the TOTO on Duckworks, with actual watertight compartments and bulkheads...nothing over 40 lbs is my motto, making it easy to port and put up on the racks of my SUV. I know these entry level, budget boats have a place...I get it and everyone needs a starting point. But man, a little due diligence and research is worth 2 or 3 cheap purchases. Most people won't make it past the first couple of seasons if they're paddling their asses off and doing donuts on the water cause they can't get the boat to track, or if it weighs a ton and they avoid taking it to the water altogether. Just my thoughts.

      I haven’t paddled that model from Swift but for me, I am not thrilled with Epoxy boats like Swift and others. Two reasons...Don’t think it is a safe building situation over the long haul for workers and I don’t want to use or be exposed to epoxy to do my own repairs once damage happens. You can’t repair epoxy boats with vinyl ester resins. Swift boats do look like fun!

    Note....I didn't realize there was outdoor vs. regular weldwood. What seemed like it worked fine,......I'm in Arkansas and it's hot here....came unglued and will be redoing with G-flex. So all that graceful maneuvering did eventually turn into "Swan Lake"...

    NICELY DONE Video!! I really really want an Eddyline. I have a 2017 Pungo 120 right now. I have paddled: 10ft Pelicans, a Pelican 120XR (YUCH), Pungo 120, Old Town Loon 126, Tsunami 140, Widlerness Systems Cape Lookout 135, Perception JoyRide 10. I love my Pungo for comfort and stability and the Dashboard. I have made some mods to it too. I Loved the Tsunami for how it felt like I was totally one with the boat. But deck height is to short in the Tsunami and my feet were really cramped. The Pelicans were junk. The Joyride was ok. The cape lookout was kindof cool. I am 6' 1" 215 with long legs and arms and size 12 feet. I consider myself to be a novice paddler.

      Sitka XT or Sandpiper 130 would be what I would check out. Maybe Equinox.

    Glad I found this video! Getting inspired to do some canoeing with the wife. Those are some beautiful paddles!

    Hi, I'm a bass fisherman, which canoe would you recomend. A canoe for two people and a Labrador Retriever. Also maybe 30% of the time or less, I'll be fishing solo with my Lab. Thanks
